About Convex Rods

The term “convex” refers to the shape made when graphing the diameter of rod sections. There is a gentle, convex curve made from tip to ferrule. And another from ferrule to butt. The result is a rod design philosophy that produces smooth casting rods with superb feel. Noted author, fly tier and rod builder Vincent Marinaro popularized the concept in his book In the Ring of the Rise. And Bill Harms and Tom Whittle further advanced the theory in their book on Marinaro.

This particular rod, based on a Harms’ taper, will work as either a fast 4 wt. or a medium action 5 wt. Characteristic of convex tapers, it is responsive at multiple distances and would be a good nymphing rod or to swing soft hackles.
